How to style a bedroom for kids of all ages, inspired by Three Birds Renovations
Styling a kid’s bedroom can be a challenge. On the one hand, you want to create an area that the little ones will absolutely adore and that’s designed just for them. On the other, it’s important to ensure these rooms still tie in with the overarching aesthetic of your home.
The entire process is a balancing act, particularly if you have multiple kids in tow. In the Three Birds Renovations Dream Home, the trio styled an older boy’s bedroom, younger boy’s bedroom and girl’s bedroom. Each room uniquely showed off the kid’s personality while tying together with the overall house look and feel.
Inspired by their approach, we share our favourite tips on achieving individual style and cohesion in the kids’ bedrooms below.
Use different (but complementary) colour schemes
Ditch the overused pastel pink walls for girls and opt for a more contemporary girl’s bedroom: think neutral walls and frames, with pops of soft rose and gold through the linens and accessories. Meanwhile, a grey or cream colour palette is the perfect starting point for a boy’s bedroom, particularly when accompanied by warm mustards, rich ambers, and cool slate blues.
The best part? These colourways create a sense of unity in your home without being too restrictive or difficult to mix and match. It’s also much easier to adjust the style of the room as the kids’ tastes grow and change.
Let the rattan reign
Ever the versatile material, Three Birds has incorporated rattan in every kid’s bedroom within the Three Birds Dream Home. The natural textures and hues of rattan add a playful and casual touch to every space, while still retaining an elegant and on-trend feel.
In particular, we love the trio’s use of the Tara Natural Rattan Sideboard in the little boy’s bedroom. Featuring handwoven natural rattan door panels and a gorgeous oak frame, this piece is a hit with kids of all ages, from tots to teens, and everyone in between.
Tie it together with patterns
It can be tricky to let every child’s individual personality shine whilst also ensuring all the bedrooms remain cohesive with each other (and the rest of your home!). One clever way that Three Birds have done this is by using similar patterns throughout the boy’s room, little boy’s room, and girl’s bedroom.
Whether it’s the checkered walls of the boy’s bedroom that echo through in the linens of the little boy’s room and the girl’s room, or the stripes that come through in the linens and the ceiling, these recurring patterns tie everything together while still remaining distinctive from one another.
Don’t cast side tables to the side
Side tables are a subtle way to add a touch of individual style to each child’s bedroom.
For the boys, make like Three Birds do and contrast the natural textures of rattan with the bold Leon Concrete Stool Side Table, or create harmony throughout the space with the Nest of Tables.
For the girls, bring a touch of femininity into the bedroom with the material of the moment: rose quartz. With its iridescent surface and brass frame, the handcrafted Casa Side Table in Rose Quartz and Gold infuses a bedroom with glamour and luxury.
Another bonus? Rose quartz is the stone of universal love — the perfect way to fill your daughter’s room with love every single day.
Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise
The joy of decorating a kid’s bedroom is that you can unleash those creative juices and let your imagination run wild. Accessories are a playful way to incorporate each child’s passions and hobbies in the room — whether it’s surfing, animals, or something else entirely.
Tip: work with the little ones to pick out trinkets and wall prints. This way, they’ll feel like the room is truly theirs.
