How to style your bed: 6 designer tips
Lazy Sundays lying in, late nights staying up with a great book, and early mornings waking up to days filled with promise and excitement – your bed is that welcoming presence that’s always there for comfort and warmth, which is exactly why you should style it to your liking.
It doesn’t take much to style your bed, but it can make a genuine difference in your enjoyment of the space.
We asked Jason Granziera, Stylist and Owner of Sage Styling Interiors, for his best bedroom styling tips, so you can uplift your bedroom and find even greater comfort every morning and night.
1. Keep it relaxed
Your bed is not the place for strict lines or rigid shapes. Opt for a more relaxed, layered vibe with soft throws and pillows so the whole space feels calming and welcoming.
“No one wants to get into their place of rest that looks like a tightly folded envelope!” explains Jason.

2. Size up when choosing a quilt
One of the most common mistakes when styling your bed (and one of the easiest to make) is to purchase a quilt that’s the same size as the mattress, such as a queen-sized quilt for a queen-sized bed.
Instead, size up. Choose a king-sized quilt for a queen-sized bed. This allows for ample – and seriously stylish – overflow that drops over the sides of the bed for fuller coverage that also hides the fitted sheet.
A larger quilt can also add to the atmosphere of plush opulence for an even more decadent and stylish space.
3. Keep the linens simple
In most bedrooms, the bed is the main attraction. That’s why it pays to keep the linens pared back and simple in order not to overwhelm the bed or the room.
Look for a classic linen quilt in a single colour, then add your own personality with layers of cushions and a throw in different colours or textures to create depth and interest. This way, you can switch out the smaller items throughout the year, leaving the classic sheets and quilt looking sleek and stylish at the centre of it all.
4. Add a little zest from the season
The latest trends and hottest styles are always a favourite for interior designers and home trend setters, and they’re an easy way to amplify the glamour in your bedroom.
Right now, that means bringing nature indoors with beautiful earthy textures and colours, and the organic beauty of hand-made accents.
“Rattan, bone inlay, and textural timbers can also be added through statement pieces such as bedsides or dressers,” adds Jason.
That could mean hand-made vases, woven baskets, terracotta-hued throw pillows, or simply chic timber furniture dotted about the space.

5. It’s not all about the bed
The bed is the masterpiece of the bedroom, but the surrounding décor is the frame, and it’s almost as important.
Aside from being highly practical and useful every day, an elegant armchair, set of nesting tables, or sleek bench seat at the end of the bed can add a real wow factor. A side table, or a set of Nomad bone inlay nesting tables is the perfect place for a splash of greenery with a pot plant, or a dash of style with a vase or elegant candle.
It’s the kind of decorating flair that you would usually only see in sumptuous hotel rooms and glitzy magazine spreads, which is exactly why it will help your bedroom feel extra chic.
6. Treat your feet to a rug
No bedroom setting is complete without a beautiful rug.
“It helps pull together all the furniture pieces and ground the setting,” offers Jason.
He goes on to suggest materials that are soft and lush underfoot, so they can add extra warmth to the space, and welcome your bare feet every morning with a gentle, cosy start to the day.
