Three Birds Renovations: How to design a stylish yet practical kid’s space
To design a kid’s space is to let your inner child’s imagination roam free.
It’s a room where you can ask yourself what you would have loved as a child, then bring it to life for your own kids. Here you can bring in more fun and more colour than anywhere else in the home, and make things just as joyous as they are practical.
In Episode five of House 13, the talented Three Birds Renovations team completed a spectacular design of the boys' bedroom, bathroom and loft. This dedicated area is a masterclass in style and practicality, while offering multiple design ideas for a kid’s space.
Go against the grain
If you’ve been following classic design styles in Episode One and Episode Three, the kid’s bedroom is the place to go against the grain and do things a little differently.
In Episode Five, the team upends the usual idea of a feature wall – and turns it into a feature ceiling. Using a gunmetal blue, they paint the ceiling with this luscious hue, adding it to the tall skirting boards for a striking framing effect.
This draws the eye upward, while also adding a fun and unexpected touch that’s stylish in its subversion.
On top of this, the trio opted for patterned wallpaper in the loft. This look is simple yet chic and eye-catching – and most importantly, it will stand the test of time as the kids grow.
Prioritise practicality in all things
A kid’s space is not the place for elegant sculptures or decorative pieces. Everything in the room should not just serve a purpose, but be catered specifically towards kids.
For example, in the kids' relaxation room, Three Birds have added Marina Round Side Tables. These tables are sturdy and heavy with solid timber and concrete tops, which makes them tough to knock over and resistant to scrapes. Additionally, the tops are sealed with a coat of clear PU, making it easy to clean up spills.
Of course, these side tables are also effortlessly chic with their compelling design and tonal colour scheme.
Don’t be afraid of adult furniture
Just because it’s a kid’s bedroom doesn’t mean it has to have kids bedroom furniture. This means you can avoid garish seats and the explosion of colours and patterns that comes with a bedroom filled with designs inspired solely by the afternoon cartoons.
Instead, consider the chic style, practicality, and durability of standard adult furniture.
In Episode Five, not only does the team visit a Lounge Lovers showroom, they also choose the Long Beach Corner Sofa for the kids' area. This couch is low to the ground, so ideal for little legs and lots of lounging, and has removable covers for easy cleaning (or replacement).
It’s also big enough that, unlike shoes and shirts and their love of cartoons, the kids won’t outgrow it anytime soon.
Seek stylish storage
Whether you’re designing a boy’s or a girl’s bedroom, one thing remains true for all kids: They simply have a lot of stuff!
Stylish storage units are your answer for keeping the area relatively tidy and adding a gorgeous piece of furniture that will uplift the entire space.
For this, Three Birds chose the Tara 180 TV Unit. Its natural tones and relaxed rattan materials offer a cool yet casual piece of furniture, but also one that’s perfect for storing anything from books and craft supplies to shoes, toys or clothing.
And despite its obvious use as a TV cabinet, it’s ideal for younger kids as it’s not too tall for little hands.
We also love: The Maya Shelf, a natural rattan bookshelf that promises a practical and stylish solution for added kid’s bedroom storage. Its closed back and sides mean items won’t be toppling off quite so easily, and its chic organic shape and natural hue will ensure it complements the decor no matter the space.
